Weekending June 17th

This year is so different from last year- in so many ways. Last year the kids and I were all about newness, and getting to know each other.
This year we are all about working hard on cherishing moments, learning, stopping and smelling the rose, and noticing amazing things all around us. It's been good.

A peek into a week...mostly in the garden.






Weekending June 10th (2016)

The weather was mostly nice last week,  but the rain did it for me. On one hand I was happy because the kids and I didn't have to water our plants, but we wanted to play. One thing that the kids have noticed that they didn't notice before are the worms  (or wigglys) as they are sometimes called, that come out after the rain (or during).

A lot of things are changing with the children. I notice the subtle changes every single week.  I think in spring and the warmer months our senses are renewed any way, but boy has it been interesting with this age group.
Aside from the little miracles, we had a pretty active week.

6 foods your child ate ...& loved (this week)

We are shifting to a lighter menu. The thing with changing the menu is (at least it feels like) as soon as I complete said menu, the season has changed. Whatever the case, the kids are trying new foods, textures, and don't you just  love the colours?
1/ summer fruit salad (cantaloupe, guava, blueberries, pomegranate seeds & I sneaked in some green  bell peppers)
2/ kale peas carrot quinoa salad
The secret to a delicious bowl of quinoa is in the preparation. Always rinse the seeds before cooking. I like to cook mine in vegetable broth, instead of water. Once I started using broth, I never went back to water.
For the above quiona salad, I followed the instructions on the package- this was just plain quinoa. I prepared the vegetables separately, and after draining and fluffing the quinoa, I added a light mixture of olive oil and lemon juice.

3/ rice cakes topped with unsalted pb, cranberries & blueberries
4/ graham cracker treats (strawberry jam & cucumber)
5/snapea crisps (for our picnic)...store bought
6/ cornbread made from polenta (the one in the tube). I modified this recipe.

So that's some of the foods your child ate this week, and loved too.

We had quite the week. One of our friends was ill the whole week- and was missed by all. Some of us were also not feeling well. I think there were a host of reasons, not including the changing weather, and possible allergies.
But nothing keeps us down...ever!
I am missing a whole bunch of pics... might have deleted them. Last week we also baked zucchini, chocolate chip muffins (I added apple to them and they were delish). We also had a little picnic (the guacamole {above}was a group effort).

Making natural watercolour paints

So last week we decided (on a whim) that we would make paint from flowers and plants that we found on our nature walk - see weekending post. We talked about the kinds of flowers that we'd seen around the neighborhood - not too many at that point. There were enough to get a decent array of colours though.
Once picked, we brought our flowers home and washed them. We always wash sticks, and plants that we bring inside regardless.  Then we separated them. Teachable moments such as French vocab, and discussions about which flowers would produce light or darker paints was discussed.

HOWEVER, there was a problem; the kids just wanted to get down to business- which was good and bad. It was good because the children were excited, but bad, because it takes a bit of time to get results. *Sigh*.
I wasn't happy with the fact that we had 2 violets. No need to fuss. It just so happened that we had a bouquet of flowers on the table. So I picked the pink flower from our bouquet to add a more vibrant colour...
We pulled off the petals and placed them in baby food jars. We smushed and mashed them a bit, and placed them in the jars that had about a tablespoon or so of hot (not too hot) water. Then we left the flowers in the jars for a couple of hours.

Then voila...
