Weekending October 21st (2016)

"Yes, it's autumn", I had to explain to the children, "but it doesn't mean that there won't be snow". This was in response to their very practical observation..."it's snowing, but it's not winter yet".
It was an up and down week. The little ones are still under the weather - at least the ones that spent every day on site. Whatever they have, they just keep passing it around to their friends, and around and around we go.
Aside from that, we celebrated another birthday, spent some time outside, create art, and had a very low key week.

Vegan & GF Squash Pear & Apple Soup

This butternut squash, pear & apple soup was a delicious addition to our Thanksgiving lunch. Each child was asked to bring an ingredient to our table for our special soup. ZA added the squash, MB brought apples, and JM brought some pears for our soup day. Amira made biscuits with the children, which were an added bonus to our yummy meal.

The children enjoyed the soup so much, that we didn't even have any left overs. 
A squash pear apple soup is actually quite filling. It is great by itself, but if made at home, it can also be paired with a salad, or warm rolls. Here's the recipe...

Butternut Squash Apple and Pear Soup
Ingredients 
3 cups peeled and cubed butternut squash
1 peeled and cubed apple (any apple will do)
1 cubed pear - skin on (I used red anjou)
3/4 cup diced carrots
3 cups vegetable stock
1 tablespoon Olive oil
salt and ground black pepper to taste
dash of cinnamon 
sprinkle nutmeg
*2 slices of whole wheat bread ~ toasted  (optional)
1/3 cup coconut milk (optional)

Directions
1. Heat the oil and melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. 
2. Add in the onion and cook until tender. 
3. Add the carrots, squash, apple and pear to the pot. and stir. 
4. Pour in the chicken stock, and season with salt, black pepper, and cinnamon. 
5. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until the vegetables and apples are tender. 
6. In a blender or food processor, puree the soup mixture until smooth. 
7. *Return to the pot, and stir in coconut milk & crumpled toast.*
8. Keep stove on low - do not boil. Serve with dash of nutmeg.

Note: If you look at the photo above, you will see that the soup is very thick. This is because I often thicken soup for the children by adding toast to the pot, or cubes of bread in their bowl.

Weekending Oct 14th (2016)

For kids, nothing defines play like "play" . Really, makes sense doesn't it?  Upon meeting their friends, eating breakfast over tiny-tot talk, playing, singing, drumming, more play, arts & crafts and a bit of nature, last week our uninterrupted play was endless - and that's how it should be.
Almost everyone was feeling much better last week; which made it possible to take advantage of the nice(ish) weather. We got a good dose of nature into our systems, and on one particular outing, the children asked to go home, after they had had enough of the elements. I don't think I have ever experienced that before.
Inside we combined work (making soup, tidying up) and fun (painting & discovering new skills), and we enjoyed a very good week together.

Small Wonders Visit Owl's Nest Bookstore

Two weeks ago the children and I bundled up and stopped in at Owl's Nest Books (Calgary's oldest independent bookstore). I had the intention to visit with the little ones in the Summer, but we just never got around to it, and I'm glad we were able to do it before year's end. The thing is, we were all under the weather in some way, shape or form, but we did good (imo).

I love Owl's Nest; it's a warm cozy little place that is so inviting. 
I also like the location. I mean, it's certainly not in our neighborhood, but located in the Britannia Shopping Plaza on Elbow Drive & 49th Avenue, taking the number 3 bus down is not only fun, (because the kids like it), it's also very accessible.
The kids had a great time. They browsed, ran around a little (not too much), and some sat down with a book or two.
Owl's Nest has a good selection of preschool French books (which is what we were after), we also picked up some other stuff gifts on our trip. Owl's Nest has a range of books and toys for any age and/ or taste, so it's definitely a one stop shop. The staff is lovely and welcoming to all. If you haven't visited, you should sooner than later.

Thank you so much to the wonderful staff who were very kind to the little ones.

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to all. I always seem to disappear around holidays don't I? Well I'm here now and I must say, I'm glad the week has passed. I am no longer ill - the children (from what I know at this point - on a late holiday Monday), are all feeling better as well.
It's not to say that the week was bad. The week was good; there were a million awesome things happening. There was food, and another b-day party, some cooking, and crafting, but I was sunk, I mean totally floored with this nasty nasty cold. The truth is that no one can be at their 100% all the time, but last week was something different. It was all about accepting reality, and not dwelling on that which cannot be done.

The other end, the kids kept me going - kids usually do. But there were some things I just couldn't do, or follow through with. For example, I really wanted to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day with the kids. I really wanted to. But I could not physically get out of the house.I also needed to bake for our week/events - couldn't do it.
And we never got around to decorating those pumpkins from MM's b-day - nope!

And had it not been for JM's dad who showed up with a b-day card for Z (my own kid), when I realized that I didn't even remember her b-day (I mean of course I know her birthday), but I had absolutely zero plans for a celebration with her friends. 
So if I've neglected to connected or (re) connect with you please do forgive me.  

I have no idea what I captured of our week...
I am still playing catch up. There's a squash pear & apple soup recipe coming up, and a few left over posts from September.
I also have some news about a great "new" sponsor that Small Wonders is partnering with, and some holiday news. We'll catch up soon!

I'd definitely like to thank Amira for baking all the goodies for the kids; and Iman for being a wonderful assistant to and for all of us.
