About Me

Welcome to Small Wonders Dayhome & Playschool! I'm Salma - keeper of this blog, busy wife  and  over-achieving mother of 5 (4 girls 1 boy).  Small Wonders is an unschooling project that turned into my livelihood. I am a trained Autism behaviour therapist, and I continue to work with families and children all over the spectrum.

I would like to start off by saying that I am not a certified teacher, philosopher or language master. I believe in the necessity of the arts, open learning, and physical education. Small Wonders aim to promote balance and harmony among children.

In 2014, after working and volunteering in various fields that aimed to promote the best of childhood and family life, I decided to take it back to the basics, and start my own dayhome/playschool. Transitioning into a dayhome/program was not difficult for me - it was just an extension of what we had been doing at home since forever (technically 1999, lol).

How so?  Well, I began (un)homeschooling/unschooling my oldest children who are now young adults. Most week-ends my children's friends would ask to join in our "school" activities. On any given weekend I found myself surrounded by 4 or 5 children, doing art, music or language. It was quite interesting! As time went on I began to learn different skills and subjects so that I could teach my kids.  I have unschooled all my children and I still love it.

Past lives have seen me as a Mommy blogger, Special-Needs Nanny, Children's Party Planner, Social Service worker, Adult Literacy Administrator, Fundraiser,  Amateur Photographer, and Caterer. I have worked in the Educational, Legal, Shelter, and Human Services.
Since 2010, I have worked behind the scene as an Infant Loss Peer Supporter (something my family has experienced first-hand).

I'm creative, organized and passionate. I'm also pretty much a Jill of All Trades. Just give me a challenge, and I'm on it!
I think my past experience flows in all that I do both as administrator of Small Wonders as well as a hands-on Facilitator of Play. Presently, I spend a great deal of time reading and learning about new ideas and best practices in childcare, and learning just about anything, so that I can pass it on to my little group. I hope to continue studying as my children grow.

When I'm not wiping snotty noses, changing poopy diapers, or cleaning up spaghetti sauce off my walls and floors, you'll probably find me editing the blog, working out, or finding something (that's not TV) to keep my young kids preoccupied.
Small Wonders was created to provide a holistic environment to cultivate friendship and experiential learning. My hope for this blog is to share honest, beautiful trifles of our days at Small Wonders.
You will also notice that I collaborate with some very wonderful community organizations and businesses. Do check them out.

“A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank…but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child.”
